Built by the city, for the city
A group of supporters, local businesses and the city's grassroots clubs wanted a senior side that could never be bought, sold or moved — so in 2026 they built their own. Wrexham United is a new club in the Welsh pyramid; it takes nothing from Wrexham AFC, who play on in the EFL.
Wrexham United was incorporated as a community benefit society in the spring of 2026. Within weeks it had 1,900 member-owners, a board elected by one-member-one-vote, and a commitment enshrined in its rules that the crest, the colours and the home ground can only ever be changed by a vote of the membership.
The Football Association of Wales granted the club a Tier 1 licence in June 2026, and United took its place in the Cymru Premier for the 2026/27 season. The dragons on the crest are for Wales; the tower is St Giles', the parish church that has watched over the city for five centuries; the crossed keys and green field are drawn from the historic arms of the borough.
The nickname — the Colliers — remembers Hafod Colliery, the pit south-east of the village that employed 1,900 men from Johnstown, Ponciau and Rhos until it closed in 1968. Its old spoil tip is now the country park you can see beyond the away end.

On Bangor Road in Johnstown, between the Shrewsbury–Chester railway line and the Aberderfyn Nature Reserve — about four miles south of Wrexham city centre and a mile from Ruabon.
